GoldenPaws My Care Plan

QUALITY OF LIFE

A gentle way to ask: how is my dog really doing?

The HHHHHMM scale, developed by veterinary oncologist Dr Alice Villalobos, helps families look at seven parts of an older dog’s life: Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility and More good days than bad.

Today's quality of life

What the HHHHHMM scale measures

Each area is scored from 1 (struggling) to 10 (comfortable). Hurt asks whether pain is controlled, including breathing. Hunger and Hydration ask whether they eat and drink enough. Hygiene covers keeping clean and comfortable. Happiness is interest in family, toys and surroundings. Mobility is getting up, walking and settling. More good days than bad asks the hardest question kindly.

Why score it more than once

A single score is a snapshot. Scoring on calm days and hard days shows the direction things are moving, which is what your vet most wants to see. Older dogs are often stoic and hide pain, so small shifts matter.

This is a reflection tool, not a diagnosis. Please share low or falling scores with your vet.
